The Resilient Therapist

A Continuing Education Retreat for Mental Health Professionals

April 3–10, 2027 | Riviera Maya, Mexico

20 Continuing Education Hours (TBD)

Resilience isn't something you are born with. It's something you build.

The Resilient Therapist is a seven-day immersive continuing education retreat in the Riviera Maya where mental health professionals explore the science and practice of resilience through both professional education and lived experience.

Led by Em Capito, LCSW, MBA,E-YRT alongside Alkemi Rising founders Cass and Jeremie Paulus, this intimate retreat brings together evidence-informed resilience education, mind-body practices, experiential learning, breathwork, cold exposure, yoga, cultural experiences, and time for genuine restoration.

You’ll return home with more than continuing education hours. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of your own resilience, practical concepts you can bring into your clinical work, and firsthand experience of what it means to meet stress, discomfort, connection, and recovery with greater awareness.

Registration is limited to 15 participants.

Continuing Education That You Experience, Not Just Study

This isn't a retreat about escaping your work.

It's about exploring what allows you to continue doing meaningful work without losing yourself in the process.

Over seven days, we’ll explore resilience from multiple perspectives—including mind-body wellness, curiosity, mindset, belonging, intentional discomfort, conflict, trauma, and nervous system regulation.

Rather than learning exclusively through lectures, participants will have opportunities to experience many of these concepts firsthand through body awareness, self-assessment, dialogue, nature, movement, mindfulness, and carefully facilitated experiential exercises.

The result is an educational experience designed to connect three things that are too often separated:

What you know professionally.
What you experience personally.
And how you show up clinically.

THE THEME: RESILIENCE

Resilience is more than our ability to endure difficult experiences.

Throughout the retreat, we’ll explore the psychological, physiological, relational, and behavioral factors that influence our capacity to adapt to stress, recover from adversity, remain connected, and continue moving toward what matters.

Participants will examine resilience both as mental health professionals and as human beings—learning concepts and practices that can support their own professional sustainability while deepening their understanding of resilience-informed clinical work.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Dynamic Resilience & Curiosity — 3.5 Hours

Establish a clinically relevant understanding of resilience and explore the frameworks that influence it, including mind-body wellness, belonging, meaning-making, mindset, and mindfulness.

Participants will explore the relationship between curiosity, fear, and adaptive coping while completing a holistic assessment of their own personal and professional resilience.

Experiential component: Guided body scan and resilience self-assessment.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define resilience as a construct relevant to mental health practice and professional sustainability.

  • Identify at least three theoretical frameworks that contribute to an integrative understanding of resilience.

  • Describe the relationship between curiosity, fear, resilience, and adaptive coping.

  • Demonstrate a body-scan technique for assessing changes in physiological stress states.

  • Complete a structured assessment of personal and professional resilience.

  • Apply assessment insights to identify personal and professional opportunities for resilience-building.

  • Compare diverse perspectives on resilience through facilitated peer dialogue.

Mind-Body Resilience — 2 Hours

Explore the relationship between sleep, nutrition, movement, psychological resilience, and our overall window of capacity.

Participants will examine the social and professional narratives that can interfere with basic mind-body wellness and explore self-compassion, cognitive reframing, and sustainable wellness practices.

Experiential components may include: mindful movement, nature walking, sound, and mindful eating.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify core mind-body wellness categories, including sleep, nutrition, and movement, and their relationship to psychological resilience.

  • Describe differences between rested, nourished, active states and fatigued, poorly nourished, sedentary states.

  • Analyze how social conditioning and professional pressures influence self-care among mental health professionals.

  • Identify limiting beliefs that interfere with sustainable mind-body practices.

  • Apply a cognitive reframing technique to an identified belief.

  • Demonstrate a self-compassion practice.

  • Formulate at least one personal mind-body wellness goal.

Intentional Discomfort — 1 Hour

What happens when we willingly meet discomfort instead of automatically avoiding it?

This module examines intentional discomfort, its relationship to historical rites of passage and contemporary exposure-based approaches, and the important limitations and contraindications that mental health professionals should understand.

Participants will observe their own responses to fear, discomfort, narrative, and nervous system activation in real time.

Optional experiential component: Guided cold exposure. Participation in cold immersion is voluntary and subject to informed consent and safety screening. Participants who do not participate may engage through observation and supportive roles.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define intentional discomfort and distinguish it from exposure therapy modalities.

  • Identify limitations and contraindications associated with exposure-based approaches.

  • Identify skills, resources, and safety supports for intentional discomfort practices.

  • Demonstrate in-the-moment self-regulation during an experiential challenge or alternative exercise.

  • Analyze responses to fear and discomfort through the lens of nervous system regulation.

  • Discuss the role of belief, narrative, and conditioning in responses to discomfort.

  • Evaluate the implications of trauma history when considering intentional discomfort practices.

Mindset — 1 Hour

Explore fixed and growth mindset frameworks through the lens of resilience.

Participants will identify limiting narratives and underlying beliefs, then practice methodologies for approaching those narratives with greater flexibility.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between fixed and growth mindset frameworks.

  • Identify personal or professional limiting narratives.

  • Identify at least two evidence-informed approaches for moving toward a growth mindset.

  • Apply growth-mindset methodologies to a specific scenario.

  • Discuss applications of growth mindset within personal and clinical settings.

Belonging — 2 Hours

Resilience doesn't happen in isolation.

This module explores belonging as an individual and collective resilience factor, including the ways trauma, attachment injuries, personality differences, and cultural norms can influence our experience of connection and disconnection.

Experiential component: Facilitated dyad and group connection exercises.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define belonging and explain its relationship to individual and collective resilience.

  • Identify personal and professional implications of belonging and disconnection.

  • Analyze factors influencing relational connection and disconnection.

  • Demonstrate participation in an experiential interpersonal connection exercise.

  • Identify approaches that support an internal sense of belonging.

  • Discuss applications of belonging to therapist-client rapport and supportive relationships.

  • Apply belonging-related skills within a shared group experience.

  • Integrate observations from experiential practice into personal and professional contexts.

Conflict & the Nervous System — 3 Hours

Explore what happens within the nervous system when conflict arises—and how greater awareness can create more choice.

Participants will examine fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and other defensive responses while learning and practicing skills for self-regulation and de-escalation during difficult conversations.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common forms of interpersonal and collective conflict and their impact on resilience.

  • Describe common nervous system reactions during perceived conflict.

  • Identify evidence-based skills for de-escalation and self-regulation.

  • Demonstrate self-regulation and de-escalation skills through a simulated difficult conversation.

  • Practice these skills within a small-group setting.

  • Evaluate their own nervous system responses and identify an area for continued development.

Trauma, Resilience & Integration — 3 Hours

The final module brings the retreat curriculum together through a trauma-informed lens.

Participants will explore how developmental and chronic trauma can influence distress tolerance, coping, communication, and relational connection before integrating the retreat's resilience frameworks into theoretical clinical cases and personal professional-development planning.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Establish a clinically grounded definition of trauma across the lifespan.

  • Explain how developmental and chronic trauma can contribute to dysregulation and reduced distress tolerance.

  • Identify mechanisms through which chronic trauma affects coping, communication, and relational connection.

  • Discuss resilience-specific interventions that support distress tolerance and coping.

  • Apply trauma-informed resilience concepts to a clinical case or professional context.

  • Integrate concepts from the retreat curriculum into a resilience-informed approach to a theoretical clinical case.

MEET YOUR GUIDES

Em Capito, LCSW, MBA, E-YRT

Em Capito is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker whose work focuses on resilience, curiosity, mind-body wellness, and the science-backed factors that support grit and adaptive coping.

During The Resilient Therapist, Em will guide participants through an integrated curriculum exploring resilience from multiple angles—from curiosity and mindset to belonging, conflict, trauma, and mind-body wellness.

Her teaching invites participants to do more than understand resilience intellectually. Through facilitated dialogue, reflection, self-assessment, and experiential exercises, participants will have opportunities to observe resilience in themselves and consider how these principles translate into clinical practice.

BREATHWORK & COLD EXPOSURE WITH CASS & PAULUS

Alkemi Rising founders Cass and Jeremie will facilitate guided breathwork and cold exposure experiences throughout the retreat.

Their work began in Utah in 2020, where they created Inner Alchemy, a community-centered space for breathwork, cold exposure, and transformational experiences. Together, they have supported well over 1,000 people through individual and group sessions, helping participants explore the relationship between breath, intentional discomfort, nervous system regulation, and resilience.

After years of facilitating this work, traveling the world, and immersing themselves in different cultures and approaches to well-being, Cass and Jeremie brought their work to Mexico and founded Alkemi Rising.

Throughout the retreat, they’ll introduce the fundamentals of breathwork and cold exposure while guiding participants through safe, supported experiences designed to move these concepts from something you understand intellectually to something you can feel and observe in your own body.

Participants will learn foundational concepts for working intentionally with breath and cold while having the opportunity to observe their own responses to controlled stress, recovery, and regulation firsthand.

Cold exposure is always voluntary and includes informed consent and appropriate risk screening.

THE RIVIERA MAYA EXPERIENCE

Go Off-Grid. Come Back Different.

Continuing education doesn't have to happen under fluorescent lights.

For seven days, the jungle of the Riviera Maya becomes our classroom.

Participants will stay at Casa Arkaana, a nourishing off-grid eco-retreat surrounded by the natural beauty of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. Between educational sessions, you'll have space to slow down, connect with fellow clinicians, enjoy nourishing meals, and experience one of the world's most extraordinary landscapes.

Our retreat experience is expected to include opportunities to:

Swim in crystal-blue cenotes.
Experience the freshwater pools and underground waterways for which the Yucatán is famous.

Visit the Caribbean coast.
Spend time along the turquoise waters and beaches of the Riviera Maya.

Experience a traditional temazcal.
Participate in a guided ceremonial experience rooted in the traditions of Mexico.

Explore the jungle.
Step outside the classroom and experience the extraordinary ecosystem surrounding our retreat home.

These cultural, wellness, and recreational experiences are part of the overall retreat experience and are not represented as NBCC continuing education hours unless specifically included within an approved qualifying educational activity.

Nourishing Experiences

Breathwork & Cold Exposure

Discover the fundamentals of breathwork and cold exposure while guiding participants through safe, supported experiences designed to move these concepts from something you understand intellectually to something you can feel and observe in your own body.

Participants will learn foundational concepts for working intentionally with breath and cold while having the opportunity to observe their own responses to controlled stress, recovery, and regulation firsthand.

Cold exposure is always voluntary and includes informed consent and appropriate risk screening.

Traditional Temazcal (Mexican Sweat Lodge)

Experience a traditional Mexican Temazcal with a trained facilitator who has carried the practice from his own lineage. Participants will gain cross-cultural awareness and explore this ancient practice through the Mexican lens.

Note: Temazcal, like all the activities are optional, and it is not part of the educational portion of the retreat. Informed consent is required, along with screening as the activity may not be appropriate for all participants.

Yoga & Resilience

Resilience is built not only through challenge, but through our ability to recover.

Optional yoga and mindful movement sessions will invite participants to practice presence, body awareness, flexibility, and recovery while supporting the physical rhythms of an immersive week of learning.

Unless otherwise expressly stated, yoga sessions are wellness activities and are not included in the calculation of NBCC continuing education hours.

ACCESSIBILITY AND DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION POLICY

Alkemi Rising is committed to providing equal opportunity to participate in its continuing education programs and to providing reasonable accommodations to participants with legally recognized disabilities in accordance with applicable disability laws and continuing education requirements.

Accommodation Requests

Participants who require a disability-related accommodation are encouraged to contact Alkemi Rising as early as possible prior to the program. Accommodation requests will be considered individually through an interactive process with the participant to determine an appropriate and reasonable accommodation.

Alkemi Rising will make reasonable efforts to provide accommodations that allow participants with physical, visual, auditory, or other legally recognized disabilities to access the educational components of the program.

Depending upon the individual's needs and the nature of the program, accommodations may include, but are not limited to:

  • Alternative-format educational materials;

  • Large-print materials;

  • Reasonable modifications to educational activities;

  • Communication accommodations for participants with hearing or visual disabilities;

  • Alternative methods of participating in or demonstrating completion of an activity when appropriate; and

  • Other reasonable accommodations are determined through consultation with the participant.

Participants requesting an accommodation should contact us by emailing us at hello@alkemirising.com

Requests should identify the accommodation being requested and any information reasonably necessary to evaluate how Alkemi Rising can provide effective access to the program.

Physical Accessibility and Retreat Environment

Certain Alkemi Rising programs are conducted at retreat centers in natural or “off-grid” locations. These environments may include uneven or unpaved terrain, stairs, narrow pathways, outdoor spaces, remote locations, and facilities that are not wheelchair accessible.

The specific physical accessibility of each program location will be disclosed to prospective participants, and participants with mobility-related disabilities are strongly encouraged to contact Alkemi Rising before registering so that we can discuss the physical environment, individual accessibility needs, and whether reasonable accommodations are available.

Alkemi Rising will make reasonable modifications when possible but cannot guarantee that all areas of a retreat property or all recreational, wellness, cultural, or experiential activities will be physically accessible.

Experiential and Wellness Activities

Retreat programs may include optional experiential or wellness activities such as breathwork, cold exposure, ice baths, temazcal or sauna experiences, movement practices, nature excursions, and other activities that involve physical exertion or environmental conditions.

These activities may have physical, mobility, environmental, or health-related requirements and may not be appropriate or accessible for every participant. Informed consent will be required of these activities.

Participation in optional wellness, recreational, cultural, or experiential activities that are not required for continuing education credit is voluntary. A participant will not be denied continuing education credit solely because a disability prevents participation in an optional non-credit activity.

When an experiential exercise is part of the educational program, Alkemi Rising will consider reasonable modifications, alternative participation, or observation when doing so provides meaningful access to the educational content without fundamentally altering the nature of the program or creating a legitimate safety concern.

Health and Safety

Some retreat activities involve inherent physical or environmental conditions, including exposure to heat or cold, confined or enclosed environments (such as  sweat lodge), uneven terrain, physical movement, or other forms of physical exertion.

Alkemi Rising may establish activity-specific safety requirements when reasonably necessary for the safe operation of an activity. Safety determinations will be based on the nature of the activity and relevant individual circumstances.

Participants are responsible for determining whether optional wellness and experiential activities are appropriate for them and should consult an appropriate health care professional when they have questions or concerns regarding participation.

When a participant cannot safely participate in an activity because of a disability, Alkemi Rising will consider reasonable alternatives or modifications where appropriate.

Individual Assessment

Because disabilities and accommodation needs vary considerably, accommodation requests will be evaluated individually. Alkemi Rising does not guarantee that every requested accommodation can be provided. An accommodation may not be available when it would fundamentally alter the nature of the program or activity, create a legitimate safety risk that cannot reasonably be mitigated, or otherwise exceed what is required under applicable law.

Whenever a requested accommodation cannot be provided, Alkemi Rising will work with the participant, when reasonably possible, to determine whether another accommodation can provide meaningful access to the educational program.

PARTICIPANT CONFIDENTIALITY AND INFORMATION SECURITY POLICY

Alkemi Rising is committed to protecting the privacy, confidentiality, and security of information collected from participants in its continuing education programs.

Information Collected

Alkemi Rising will collect only information reasonably necessary to administer its programs and continuing education requirements. Continuing Education Records

Records required to document participation, attendance, completion, and continuing education credit will be maintained in accordance with applicable NBCC record-retention requirements.

Certificates and CE records will only be issued or released to the participant or another party when authorized by the participant or otherwise required by law.

Accommodation and Sensitive Information

Information provided in connection with disability accommodation requests or other sensitive participant needs will be treated as confidential and shared only with individuals who need the information to arrange the requested accommodation or support participant safety.

Staff and Presenter Responsibilities

Staff, contractors, and presenters with access to participant information are expected to maintain its confidentiality and use the information only for its intended program-related purpose.

Any suspected loss, unauthorized access, or disclosure of participant information will be promptly reviewed and appropriate corrective action will be taken.

The complaint should include the participant's name, the program attended, a description of the concern, and the resolution being requested.

Alkemi Rising will:
